How do I prepare and paint my concrete entry way outside?

cheermaster71 asked:

I am wanting to paint my concrete patio area outside. What would be the best way to prepare and paint the area and give it a nice updated look?

colored concrete Louisville Colorado

Tried it, done it many times. I can’t get anything to stick so I had my porch concrete designed. All they do is put a 1/4 inch layer of concrete over existing concrete, lay down a stencil and put another layer of concrete on top. Then they pull the stencil up creating a pattern. Then they stain the concrete what ever color you want. I love it! Its going to probably last for ever.

I prepared the concrete by making sure it was dry and dust free. Then I put down 2 heavy coats of Thompson’s water seal. Concrete it notorious for holding water which makes you paint peel. The water seal makes a layer between the concrete and water and the paint.

Since it’s a place you walk I would also suggest that when you go to the paint store you buy a bag of sand (they make it for putting in paint) and add it to the paint so it won’t be slippery when your project is finished.

Mine has looked good for years. I repaint it every once in a while to make it look new–not because the paint is peeling.
